Manacles and fetters (杻械: the first character is pronounced *chi* + *jiu* [= *niǔ*]; the second character is pronounced *hu* + *jie* [= *xiè*]; the *Yupian* says they are stocks and fetters; made of perforated wood, those on the hands are called *niu* and those on the feet are called *xie*; both characters take the wood radical, with *chou* [丑] and *jie* [戒] as their phonetics).
