Yojana (踰繕那: the upper character has the fanqie *yáng* + *zhū* [yú]; the second character is pronounced *shàn*. This is Sanskrit; also rendered as *yúshénà*; anciently called *yóuxún*, which are all corruptions and abbreviations. Correctly it is *yúzhànnà*, which is a single day's march of an ancient sage-king's army. Various sūtras and treatises differ in their accounts of its mileage: some say forty *li*, some say thirty *li*, and some say only sixteen *li*. This is perhaps because sage-kings marched fast or slow, or because the cubit used differed, or according to ancient standard feet; although there are divergent opinions, in the end it represents a single day's journey for a royal army. According to the *Xiyu ji*, thirty *li* is settled as definitive; since Dharma Master Xuanzang personally verified distances and composed this travelogue to answer the inquiries of Emperor Taizong, his words are surely not mistaken).
