蚊虻 [Mosquitoes and gadflies]: The upper [character] has the fanqie 勿汾 (wù + fén = wén); the Fangyan says, “Qin called gnats 蚊; small flying insects that bite people.” The Shuowen writes it as 蟁, with the Wu dialect sound 閩. The sūtra text writes 蚉, a vulgar character. The lower [character] has the fanqie 莫耕 (mò + gēng = méng); the Shenglei says, “Of the category of mosquitoes and gnats, resembling flies but larger.” The Shuowen says, “Transformatively generated among mountains, marshes, grass, and flowers; also born on deer bodies; the large ones are called 虻, the small ones 𱗶 (sounded as 蹔).”
