In the miscellaneous Vinaya texts of the Sarvāstivāda section glossed above, many characters contain discrepancies and errors. This is because at the time of translation, those who held the brush simply wrote down what they heard without examining the meaning. Thus the Kaiyuan shijiao lu states: "Beyond his formal translations, Master Yijing translated various vargas from the Mūlasarvāstivāda, amounting to some sixty to seventy fascicles. Before he had leisure to revise and review them, he abruptly entered nirvāṇa. These texts were subsequently set aside, and the present continuation of pronunciations is based on those manuscripts." Fearing that future readers might not know their origins and might conversely blame Xilin for picking out non-existent character errors, this preface is cited here.
