[Śāriputra] The Dazhidu lun says: "There was a brāhmaṇa master of disputation named King Bhadra (and so forth). His wife gave birth to a daughter whose eyes resembled those of a śāri bird, so this daughter was named Śāri (and so forth). Because he was born of this Śāri, the crowd together called him Śāriputra. Putra is Qin for 'son'." The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: "Just as Śāriputra's mother was named Śāri, his name was established from his mother, hence he was called Śāriputra." It is also translated as Shenzi ('Son of Body'). The Wenju says: "This woman had a fine physical form (shen), and being born of her body, he was therefore called Shenzi. He is also called Qiuzi ('Son of the Heron'). The mother's eyes were clear and bright, like the eyes of a heron (qiu-lu)."
