[Mahāmaudgalyāyana] Kumārajīva said: "Maudgalyāyana is a brāhmaṇa clan name; his personal name was Kolita. Kolita is the name of a tree. His parents prayed to the tree deity and obtained a son, naming him accordingly." The Chuiyu ji [records]: "Question: 'The Great Sūtra says Maudgalyāyana is the clan name, and because of the clan he was named Maudgalyāyana. Why then is he called Kolita?' Answer: 'He originally had his own personal name, but contemporaries mostly addressed him by his clan name, hence the Great Sūtra says so.'" The Jingming shu says: "The Wenshu wen jing translates it as 'Radish Root'; his parents were fond of eating it, and marked their son's name with it." Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha said: "Mugdha is here translated as horse gram, a green-colored bean. Sages of antiquity were fond of eating this and took it as their clan name." Properly it is Mahāmaudgalyāyana; the new translation renders it 'Bean-Gatherer Clan'. Shu is also a bean. The Xiyu ji says: "Maudgalyāyana was formerly called Mujianlian, which is an erroneous abbreviation."
