[Mahā-kauṣṭhila] The Dazhidu lun says: 'In Qin speech, it means Big Knee. Māṭhara subsequently gave birth to a son whose knee bones were coarse and large, hence he was named Kauṣṭhila. He was the maternal uncle of Śāriputra. When debating with his sister Śāri, he was not her equal. Kauṣṭhila contemplated and thought: "This is not my sister's own ability; she must be carrying a wise person. She borrows speech through the mother's mouth. If it is already like this before birth, how will it be when he is born and grown up?" Therefore he renounced household life to become a brahmacārin, entered Southern India, vowed not to cut his nails, and studied the eighteen classes of scriptures.'
