【Aśvaghoṣa】 Also called Aśvajuṣa. The *Records of the Western Regions* states: "In the Tang language, it is called Horse Neighing (Maming)." The *Tract on the Mahāyāna* states: "If one examines his origin, he is the Great Light Buddha; if one considers his cause, he is a bodhisattva abiding in the stage of the eighth bhūmi. He was born in Western India; Ruca was his father, and Guṇā was his mother, and they together brought forth benefit. In a past age, there was a great king named Ruṇḍa who had a thousand white birds, all with beautiful cries. If the birds uttered cries, the great king's virtue increased; if they did not utter cries, the great king's virtue diminished. When these birds saw white horses, they would utter cries; when they did not see them, they never uttered cries. At that time, the great king sought white horses everywhere, but could not find any all day long. He made this declaration: 'If non-Buddhists cause these birds to call, all Buddhist teachings shall be overthrown, and they alone shall be revered and believed; if disciples of the Buddha cause these birds to call, all non-Buddhist teachings shall be overthrown, and they alone shall be revered and believed.' At that time, the bodhisattva used his supernormal powers to manifest a thousand white horses, which caused the thousand white birds to cry out, thereby carrying forward and magnifying the true Dharma so that it would not be cut off. For this reason, the Bhagavat named him Horse Neighing." The *Comprehensive Essentials of the Vinaya School* cites a story different from this, which scholars should consult.
