[Ratnamati] Also called [Ratna]bhadra; here rendered as "Precious Thought" (Baoyi). A man of Central India. He could recite one hundred million verses; his erudition was abundantly rich, and he penetrated both principle and phenomena, illuminating the methods of dhyāna. Emperor Xuanwu of the Wei invited him to lecture on the *Avataṃsaka*, and the wording and meaning brought enlightenment. Suddenly, from his high seat, he saw a high official holding a tablet, saying, "The Heavenly Emperor invites the Master to lecture on the *Avataṃsaka*." Ratnamati said, "Now the Dharma assembly is not yet finished; once the sūtra is completed, I will obey your command; yet the Dharma cannot be supported alone: the chief chanter, the incense-bearer, the karmadāna, and the chanter of hymns, please arrange for them as well." The messenger did as he said. When the lecture was about to conclude, the previous messenger was seen coming to welcome them. As expected, together with the chief chanter and the others, five persons in all passed away at the same time on their seats, as both monastics and laity witnessed.
