[Buddhacarita / Buddhapāla?] In the language of the Tang: "Awakening-Protection" (Juehu). A native of the kingdom of Jibin. Forgetting his body in service of the Way, he visited sacred sites everywhere. Hearing that Mañjuśrī resided on Mount Qingliang, he traveled far across the flowing sands, coming in person to pay homage. In the first year of the Yifeng era of the Heavenly Emperor, grasping his staff on Wutai, he reverently bowed before the sacred countenance. Suddenly he saw an old man emerging from the mountain, speaking in the language of a brāhmaṇa, who said to Buddhapāla, "Master, what do you seek?" Buddhapāla replied, "Hearing that Mañjuśrī hides on this mountain, I have come wishing to gaze upon and worship him." The old man said, "Master, did you bring the *Uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī-sūtra*? The sentient beings of this land create many sins. The Uṣṇīṣa mantra is a secret prescription for eradicating sins; if you did not bring the sūtra, you have come in vain to no benefit. Even if you saw Mañjuśrī, how would you be able to recognize him? You should return to the Western countries, obtain the sūtra, and transmit it here; this disciple will then show you where Mañjuśrī is." Buddhapāla thereupon bowed; when he raised his head, the old man was not to be seen. He then returned to his native kingdom, obtained the sūtra and brought it, reporting it in a memorial to the Heavenly Emperor. The Emperor then commanded Du Xingyi and the Tripiṭaka Master Divākara to translate it together in the palace, and the sūtra was retained inside. Buddhapāla wept and memorialized, "My intention was to benefit others; I pray that it be distributed and circulated." The Emperor, pitying his single-minded intent, retained the translated sūtra and returned the Sanskrit original to him. Buddhapāla took it to Ximing [Monastery] and, together with the monk Shunzhen, translated the *Uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī-sūtra*. His wish having been fulfilled, he took the Sanskrit manuscript of the sūtra and entered Mount Wutai, and to this day has not emerged.
