[Śuka] Alternatively śukabahī; this is translated as parrot. The Shuowen says: 'A bird that can speak.' The Shanhai jing says: 'On Mount Huang and Mount Shuli there is a bird whose shape is like an osprey, with green feathers, a red beak, and a human tongue that can speak, called the parrot.' The "Quli" says: 'A parrot can speak, but it does not cease to be a flying bird; an ape can speak, but it does not cease to be a beast. If a human lacks propriety, is it not the mind of a beast?' The Zabaozang jing says: 'In the past in the Himalayas there was a parrot whose parents were both blind; it constantly gathered flowers and fruits to offer first to its parents. At that time there was a field owner who, when first sowing grain, made a vow to share its food with all living beings. The parrot constantly gathered his grain in the field. When the field owner inspected his fields and saw the plucked grain stalks, he set up a net and captured the parrot. The bird said to the owner: "Because you previously had a generous mind of giving, I dared to come and gather it. Why now do you catch me in a net?" The field owner asked the bird: "To whom do you give the grain?" It replied: "I have blind parents, and wish to present it to them." The field owner replied: "Henceforth gather it constantly without any further doubts (and so on)." The Buddha said: "The parrot at that time was myself; the field owner was Śāriputra."'
