【Viraṇa-kacchapa】 This translates as turtle. The Erya clarifies ten kinds of turtles. The Zhuangzi says: "Lord Yuan of Song dreamed of a man with dishevelled hair who said: 'I am the envoy of the Pure River, the River God; I was caught by the fisherman Yuqie.' Lord Yuan had someone divine this, who said: 'This is a divine turtle.' Thereupon he summoned Yuqie. Yuqie had caught a white turtle five feet long on his line and presented it. They then cut it open to divine by it; seventy borings were made without a single mistaken prediction. Confucius said: 'The turtle could appear in a dream to Lord Yuan, but could not escape Yuqie's net; its wisdom could deliver seventy borings without a single mistaken prediction, but could not avoid the calamity of having its intestines cut out. Thus, wisdom has that in which it is divine, yet wisdom has that which it cannot reach.'" The Dharmapada says: "In the past, a practitioner cultivated the Way by a river, but only thought of the six sense-objects, his mind never at peace. A turtle emerged from the river, and an otter was about to devour the turtle. The turtle pulled in its head, tail, and four legs, hiding within its shell, so that the otter could find no advantage. When the otter left, it came out again and was able to enter the water. The practitioner thereupon realized: 'I am not equal to a turtle; giving free rein to the six passions, I do not know that death is approaching.'"
