[Vajrapāṇi] In Liang, it was translated as 'adamantine' (jingang). Dharma Master Huanying says: 'Vajra translates here as adamantine. Pāṇi translates here as hand. It is named from holding a vajra pestle in hand.' The *Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra* states: 'Anciently there was a king whose queen bore a thousand sons. Wishing to test the order in which they would attain Buddhahood in the future, Krakucchanda drew the first lot, Śākyamuni drew the fourth lot, down to Rocana who drew the thousandth lot. The second queen bore two sons. One vowed to be Brahmā King, requesting his thousand elder brothers to turn the wheel of the Dharma. The next vowed to be the Guhyapada Vajra spirit (Dharma Master Huanying says: "The Sanskrit word is śānta, translated as Lord of Secrets, because he knows the merits of the Buddha's three mysteries. The Sanskrit original has no meaning of 'footprint' or 'trace'; taking the manifestation of traces to be a spirit was established interpretively by translators, hence it is called Guhyapada [Secret Traces]"), to protect the teachings and Dharma of his thousand elder brothers.' Popular tradition holds that he is an incarnation of Rocana, but this is incorrect; he is Prince Fayis. According to the sūtras he is only one person, yet today he is depicted at the gates of saṅghārāmas as two statues. Since responsive transformations are boundless, even many would be without fault; this appears in the *Suoyin ji*.
