【Saṃjñeya】 Here translated as 'Secret' (Mi), meaning that his name, practice, principle, and wisdom are all four secret. Tiantai, in explaining the great heavenly generals, states that the *Suvarṇaprabhāsa* regards Saṃjñeya as the great general. The *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra* says: 'Eight-armed Gandha, the mighty warrior among devas.' The *Dàzhìdù lùn* also mentions Kumārarāja, here translated as 'Youth' (Tongzi), who rides a peacock, holds a rooster, carries a bell, and grasps a red banner. There is also Viṣṇu, here translated as 'Universally Heard' (Pianwen), who has four arms and holds a conch, a wheel, and a garuḍa. These are all great generals among the devas; it is not yet known which one this great general definitely is. The *Guāngmíng shū* says: 'The twenty-eight classes patrol the world, rewarding good and punishing evil, all governed by Saṃjñeya.'"
