[Jīva Deva] Changshui says: 'Jīva translates here as life. It is the custom of Western countries to worship the deity of longevity, but where this explanation comes from is unknown. According to the *Lotus Sūtra Commentary*: "Jīvaka translates as 'originally alive'. He was born in the Trāyastriṃśa heaven. Maudgalyāyana had a disciple who fell ill, so he used his supernormal powers to go and inquire. He happened to meet the gods going out to play in the gardens; Jīvaka was riding in a chariot and did not descend, but merely joined his palms. Maudgalyāyana stopped him. Jīvaka said: 'The pleasures of the gods are so urgent that there is no leisure to look around. What does the Venerable One seek?' Maudgalyāyana explained his purpose in coming. Jīvaka replied: 'Fasting is essential.' Maudgalyāyana let him go, and only then was the chariot able to depart." Based on this, Jīva Deva is none other than the physician Jīvaka.'
