【Asita】 Also written as Ayi; translated here as “Incomparable”, and also translated as “Upright”. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: “The ṛṣi Asita addressed King Śuddhodana, saying: ‘With the divine ear, I heard the devas, ghosts, and spirits say that King Śuddhodana had fathered a son endowed with the bodily marks of a Buddha, so I have come to request to see him.’ The king was overjoyed, and commanded his attendants to bring out the crown prince. The attendants answered the king: ‘The crown prince is taking a short rest.’ Thereupon Asita said: ‘A holy king constantly awakens all beings and bestows amṛta upon them; he should not be sleeping.’ He then arose from his seat, went to the prince's place, took him in his arms, and examined his marks from head to toe. Having examined the marks, he wept uncontrollably. The king was greatly displeased and asked the physiognomist: ‘Is there some ill omen that makes you weep like this?’ The ṛṣi answered, saying: ‘Even if the heavens were to rain down giant adamantine mountains, they could not shake a single hair of his; how could there be an ill omen? The prince is certain to become a Buddha. I am advanced in years and will be reborn in the formless realm, unable to see the Buddha or hear his Dharma; therefore I weep in self-pity.’”
