[Cāṇḍāla]: Translated as "butcher"; properly pronounced caṇḍāla. Here translated as "fierce and blazing," meaning they adorn themselves with evil karma. When walking, they ring bells and hold bamboo sticks as a sign. If they did not do so, the king would surely punish them. The Faxian zhuan says: "They are named evil people, dwelling separately from others. When entering cities and markets, they strike bamboo to distinguish themselves, and people avoid them. Or they wear markers, and people all dread them."
