毘藍名苑，母摘華而降生。菩提覺場，佛觀樹而行道。居鹿園以說法，住鶴林而涅槃。既皆依於脩林，故宜編乎異木。

Lumbinī was the renowned grove where the mother plucked a flower and gave birth. Bodhimaṇḍa was the seat of awakening where the Buddha gazed upon the tree and practiced the Way. He resided in the Deer Park to preach the Dharma, and dwelt in the Śāla Grove to enter nirvāṇa. Since these all relied upon tall forests, it is fitting to compile [a chapter on] remarkable trees.
