[Vedaka]: The *Records of the Western Regions* says: 'Below the rocky cliff north of the Dṛḍhagaja Stūpa, there is a nāga spring. It was where the Tathāgata, having received miraculous food, together with arhats rinsed his mouth and chewed a tooth-stick; it subsequently took root and has now become a luxuriant forest. Later people established a saṅghārāma here, named Vedaka, which in the language of the Tang means chewing tooth-stick.' The *Vinaya* says: 'Chewing a tooth-stick has five benefits: first, the mouth is not foul; second, the mouth is not bitter; third, it eliminates wind; fourth, it eliminates heat; fifth, it eliminates phlegm and fluid retention.' The *Dharmaguptaka Vinaya* states: 'Not chewing a tooth-stick has five faults: foul breath, inability to discern flavors well, heat and fluid retention not dissipating, lack of appetite, and dimness of eyes.'
