[Saindhava]: Translated here as rock salt. The incense resembles it, and so it was named after it. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "In the Tuṣita Heaven there is an incense named saindhava. Before the seat of the bodhisattva bound to one last rebirth, burning a single pellet raises a vast cloud of incense that pervades the entire dharmadhātu." The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: "Salt, water, a vessel, and a horse: one name designates four realities, and a wise minister knows them well. That is, at bathing time he presents water; at eating time he presents salt; at drinking time he presents a vessel; at touring time he presents a horse. In all cases, one merely says, 'Bring saindhava.'" Zhang'an says: "These four meanings are also identical in intention with the four teachings, four gates, and four propositions; all should correspond in sequence to the four, such as salt."
