[Vaidūrya] Or written liú; here translated as blue-colored gem, also translated as not distant. It is said that in the Western Regions there is a mountain not far from the city of Vārāṇasī; this gem is produced in this mountain, hence it was named after it. Master Huilin states: 'Sometimes the character fei is added, or the character pi is added, or it is called bitouli, named after the mountain; it is indeed a gem of the distant mountain. The distant mountain is Mount Sumeru. This gem is blue in color; all gems cannot destroy it, nor can smoke and flame melt or cast it; only spirits and ghosts possessing supernormal powers are able to break it. It is also said to be the eggshell of the garuḍa bird, which ghosts and spirits obtain and sell to humans. It is also named dark-blue vaidūrya.' The Shiming states: 'Gan (dark blue) means to contain; it is blue containing a reddish tint.' In ancient writing it was merely written as liuli (流離); Zuo Taichong's Wu Capital Rhapsody states: 'Bringing liuli and kechu (both names of gems).' Only later did people add the jade radical.
