[Coral (shānhú)] Sanskrit: pravāḍaphala. The Waiguo zhuan states: 'Seven to eight hundred li into the rising sea southwest of Daqin, one reaches Coral Island. At the bottom of the island is bedrock, upon which coral grows; people harvest it with iron nets.' Ren Fang's Shuyi ji states: 'Coral trees are emerald green in color and grow on the seabed. A single trunk has dozens of branches, and there are no leaves among the branches; the large ones are five or six chi tall, while the small ones are over a chi.' Master Huilin states: 'In the first year it is blue-green, in the second year yellow, and in the third year it is eaten and ruined by worms.' The Da zhidu lun states: 'Coral comes from stone trees in the sea.'
