[Jambudvīpa] Corruptly called Shanfu; here it is translated as 'Superior Gold'. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "Jambu is the name of a tree. Its forest is luxuriant, and this tree is the largest in the forest; the continent is named after it. On this continent there is this tree forest, and in the forest there is a river, at the bottom of which is gold sand, called jambūnada gold. Because of the jambu tree, it is called Jambudvīpa. This continent is surrounded by five hundred small continents, all collectively called Jambudvīpa." The Kanzheng says: "In this case, the river takes its name from the tree, and the gold derives its name from the river." Changshui says: "Some say the juice of the jambu fruit turns whatever it touches into gold; as it flows into the river, it stains the stones into gold. Its color is reddish-yellow, tinged with a purple flame." The Record of the Western Regions says: "Southern Jambudvīpa, formerly called Yanfuti-zhou or Shanfu-zhou, both of which are corrupt." The Zangchao says: "Jambu has no equivalent in this land, hence it is not translated. Only in the phonological notes of the Record of the Western Regions is it translated as 'impure tree'. The southern continent of Jambudvīpa is broad in the north and narrow in the south, with three sides equal in measure, shaped like a cart." The Abhidharmakośa says: "The bodies of the people of Jambudvīpa are mostly three and a half cubits tall, and human lifespan has no fixed limit."
