【修多羅】此云契經，有通有別。通則修多羅聖教之都名；別則《妙玄》云：「直說法相者，是別修多羅，如說四諦等也。」所言別者，《雜集論》云：「謂長行綴葺略，說所應說義。」

【Sūtra】 Here translated as tallying scripture (*qìjīng*). It has a general and a specific [meaning]. In the general sense, *sūtra* is the collective name for the sacred teachings. In the specific sense, the *Miaoxuan* states: "Directly explaining dharma-characteristics is the specific sūtra, such as expounding the four truths, etc." As for what is called the specific, the *Samuccaya* states: "It refers to assembling in prose a concise explanation of the meanings that ought to be expounded."
