【奢摩他】此云止。《涅槃經》云：「奢摩他，名為能滅，能滅一切煩惱結故；又名能調，能調諸根惡不善法故。又曰寂靜，能令三業成寂靜故。又曰遠離，能令眾生離五欲故。又曰能清，能清貪欲瞋恚愚癡三濁法故。以是義故，故名定相。」

*Śamatha*:] Translated here as cessation (zhǐ). The *Nirvāṇa-sūtra* says: "*Śamatha* is named 'able to extinguish', because it can extinguish all knots of affliction; it is also named 'able to harmonize', because it can harmonize the unwholesome and unvirtuous dharmas of the sense faculties; it is also called 'quiescent', because it can make the three karmas quiescent; it is also called 'distancing', because it can cause sentient beings to leave behind the five desires; it is also called 'able to clarify', because it can clarify the three defiled dharmas of greed, anger, and delusion. For these reasons, it is named the mark of concentration (samādhi)."
