Fourth, the metaphor of the shadow: the Family Instructions of the Yan Clan says: "The character ying (shadow) should be the jing of guangjing (brightness/light). In all cases, a shaded image is produced because of light, which is called jing." The Book of Documents says: 'Only shadow and echo.' Ge Hong's Ziyuan of the Jin dynasty added the radical 彡 beside it (pronounced like jing). In Sanskrit it is called bimbajāla, which here means 'the shadow of a body.' The Jingming shu says: "When an object obstructs light, a shadow appears. When the object differs, the shadow differs; when the object moves, the shadow moves. When ignorance and karmic activity obstruct the light of principle and wisdom, then the three things exist, and the reward body appears like a shadow with differing karmas, flowing and shifting without unity from birth to death."
