[Liberation (vimokṣa)] Zhao said: "To act freely without obstruction, unbound by worldly defilements, is liberation." [Kumāra]jīva said: "It is also called samādhi, and also called the bases of supernormal power (ṛddhipāda). It can cause lengths and breadths to change measure, or the vast and the minute to contain each other; transformation accords with one's will, and one is sovereign over all phenomena, liberated and unobstructed; hence it is called liberation." He also said: "The mind attains sovereignty and is not bound by incapacity; hence it is called liberation." The Commentary on the Vimalakīrti says: "First is true nature, second is real wisdom, and third is expedient means. Thus the sūtra says: 'The Buddhas and bodhisattvas possess a liberation called the Inconceivable.' If a bodhisattva abides in this liberation, he can place the height and breadth of Mount Sumeru inside a mustard seed, down to various unpredictable transformations; these are the meanings of the three kinds of inconceivable liberation. What are they? That 'bodhisattvas possess a liberation' is the true nature. That 'if a bodhisattva abides in this' is the real wisdom. Being able to 'place Sumeru inside a mustard seed, etc.' is the expedient means." The Large Perfection of Wisdom Sūtra says: "The mind attains good liberation, and wisdom attains good liberation." Chuiyu says: "Liberation of mind refers to [the liberation] of both; liberation of wisdom refers to [the liberation through] wisdom."
