[Bhāviveka] The Record of the Western Regions says: "In the language of Tang, it is rendered Qingbian ('Clear Discernment'). Reflecting in quietude, he thought: 'Unless Maitreya becomes a Buddha, who can resolve my doubts?' Thereupon, before an image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, he recited the Hṛdaya-dhāraṇī. After three years had passed, the Bodhisattva manifested his physical form and asked the master of treatises: 'What is your aspiration?' He replied: 'I wish to preserve this body and wait to see Maitreya.' The Bodhisattva said: 'Human life is difficult to maintain. You should cultivate supreme goodness and be reborn in the Tuṣita heaven; only then will you see Maitreya.' He replied: 'My aspiration cannot be taken from me.' The Bodhisattva further said: 'If that is so, you should go to the country of Dhānyakaṭaka, to the mountain cliffs south of the city, to the dwelling place of the Vajradhara spirit. If with sincere determination you recite and maintain the Vajradhara-dhāraṇī, you shall achieve this wish.' The treatise master then went there and recited it. After three years, the spirit came forth and asked, 'What is your wish?' The treatise master replied: 'I wish to preserve this body and wait to see Maitreya.' The spirit also told him: 'Inside these craggy rocks there is an asura's palace. If you perform the petition in accordance with the Dharma, the rock wall will open. Once it opens, enter within, and you may see him.' The spirit also said: 'When Maitreya appears in the world, I shall notify you!' Receiving the instruction, the treatise master concentrated single-mindedly on reciting and maintaining it. After another three years had passed, he empowered mustard seeds with mantras to strike the rock wall, whereupon the rock wall opened. The treatise master then entered within the rock wall along with six people. Once they had entered, the rock wall returned to how it was before."
