[Ācārya (sheri)] Also rendered aqili. The Record of the Southern Sea says: "In Sanskrit, it is ācārya. In the language of the Tang, it means 'model' (guifan). Now called sheli, this is a corrupted abbreviation." The Bodhisambhāra-śāstra says: "Ācārya means 'correct conduct' in the language of the Sui." The Nanshan Commentary states: "It is because he can rectify the disciple's conduct. The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya explains five kinds of ācāryas: 1. the ācārya for leaving home, upon whom one relies to leave householder life; 2. the ācārya for receiving the precepts, who performs the karmavācanā for receiving the precepts; 3. the instruction ācārya, who instructs in decorum; 4. the scripture-recitation ācārya, from whom one receives scriptures or who explains their meanings, down to a four-line verse; 5. the reliance ācārya, upon whom one relies to dwell even for a single night. Upādhyāyas and reliance preceptors are served by those who have ten summer retreats more than oneself; the other four masters are all served by those who have five summer retreats more than oneself."
