【Maheśvara】 The *Dàzhìdù lùn* says: "Here translated as 'Great Sovereign' (Da zizai); the correct name is Mahā-Maheśvara. He has eight arms, three eyes, and rides a white ox." The *Pǔmén shū* says: "The *Lóutàn jīng* calls it Akaniṣṭha; the *Huáyán jīng* calls it the Ultimate of Form. Some people consider it to be the sixth heaven [of the desire realm], but various sūtras and treatises mostly state that the Great Sovereign is the summit of the form realm. The *Dàzhìdù lùn* says: 'Beyond the Pure Abode Heavens, there are bodhisattvas of the ten abodes, titled Great Sovereign, masters of the great chiliocosm.' The *Shízhù jīng* says: 'The light of Maheśvara surpasses all sentient beings.' In the offerings presented at the nirvāṇa, Maheśvara was supreme; therefore it is not the sixth heaven." Guanding says: "He is styled Emperor Weiling."
