[Nāga] Translated here as dragon. The *Biexing shu* says: 'There are four kinds of dragons: first, those that guard heavenly palaces, holding them up so they do not fall—images of dragons are made on human roofs to represent this; second, those that raise clouds and bring rain, benefiting humankind; third, earth dragons, which dredge rivers and open canals; fourth, hidden treasures, which guard the treasures of wheel-turning kings and persons of great merit. Dragons have four modes of birth. The *Abhidharmakośa* states: "Egg-born garuḍas can eat dragons of all four births." The *Mayi jing* states: "There are four causes and conditions for falling into the realm of dragons: first, giving much; second, anger; third, treating people with contempt; fourth, arrogance." The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* states: "When a dragon king brings down rain, it does not come from his body, nor does it come from his mind; there is no accumulation of it, yet it is not unseen. Merely through the power of the dragon king's mental intention, torrential rain pours down, covering all beneath heaven. Such a realm is inconceivable."'
