[Rāhu] The Textual Commentary states: "Translated here as 'Obstructing and Holding.' His transformed body is eighty-four thousand yojanas tall; raising his hand and palm, he obstructs the sun and moon, which the world calls a solar or lunar eclipse." The Shiming states: "The waning of the sun and moon is called an eclipse (shi); slightly and gradually encroaching and waning, like an insect eating (shi) the leaves of plants and trees." Jing Fang's Commentary on the Changes states: "When the sun and moon turn red and yellow, it is called a faint veil (bo). Or it is said: when they are eclipsed without intersecting, it is called a faint veil." Wei Zhao said: "When qi goes and veils them, it is bo; when they are encroached and damaged, it is shi." The Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: "Like the sun and moon in the heavens, whose nature is originally bright and pure; when covered by the five obscurations—smoke, clouds, dust, fog, and the like—they do not appear." 'And the like' refers to the asura. Therefore the Buddha admonished: 'Asura! Asura! Do not swallow the moon; the moon can dispel darkness and relieve the manifold heat.'"
