【Manuṣya】 The Wenju says: "Here translated as 'mind' (manas). Formerly, when King Māndhātṛ first transformed [the world, he said:] 'In all that you do, you should reflect well and remember well.' According with the king's instruction, in all that they did they first reflected and remembered; hence they were called 'mind' (manuṣya). Furthermore, humans are able to still the mind, are able to cultivate the path, and obtain the factor of realization. Furthermore, humans are called 'conceited' (māna); among the five destinies, they have much conceit." The Abhidharma treatises say: "Why is the human destiny called manuṣya? There are eight meanings: first, cleverness; second, superiority; third, subtlety of mind; fourth, correct awakening; fifth, superior wisdom; sixth, the ability to distinguish truth and falsehood; seventh, being a proper vessel for the noble path; and eighth, being generated by clever karma."
