【Puruṣa】 Or fulousha; the correct form is fulusha. Here translated as 'hero' (zhangfu). The Da Dai Liji says: "Zhang means elder. Fu means to support. It means an elder controls the myriad things and supports and connects them with the Way." Mencius said: "Riches and honors cannot corrupt him, poverty and lowliness cannot divert him, power and force cannot bend him: such a one is called a great hero." It is also translated as 'gentleman' (shifu). A commentary says: "One who comprehends past and present and distinguishes the correct and incorrect is called a shi. Numbers begin with one and end with ten." Confucius said: "Deducing one to unite ten makes a shi." The Commentary on the Odes says: "Shi means service (shi)." The Baihu tong says: "Shi is a designation for taking up service." The Rites of Zhou says: "The Son of Heaven has senior gentlemen, intermediate gentlemen, and junior gentlemen." The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: "This Mahāyāna scripture possesses the marks of a hero, namely the Buddha-nature. If a person does not know this Buddha-nature, they lack the masculine marks and are all called women."
