[Vairambha]: Also called suilan; here translated as swift and violent wind. The Da zhidu lun says: 'The winds from the eight directions cannot shake Mount Sumeru, but when the vairambha wind arrives, it shatters it like rotting grass.' The Fodi lun clarifies the eight winds: obtaining what is agreeable is called gain; losing what is agreeable is called loss; unseen slander is called defamation; unseen praise is called eulogy; present praise is called acclaim; present slander is called ridicule; distress of body and mind is called suffering; delight of body and mind is called pleasure. The Jingming shu says: 'One who practices firm compassion has a mind like a vajra, achieving the true compassionate mind, undamaged by the eight winds within or outside the realms.' Jingxi says: 'Externally there are no eight marks; it is merely that adverse and favorable, true and middle differ, and thus are distinguished from the internal.'
