[Gopī] Here translated as "Luminous Woman." The Wumeng jing says: "She was the daughter of the elder Sheyi. The elder's name was Shuiguang, and his wife's name was Yuming. The wife resided near the city. When the girl was born, the sun was about to set, and the remaining light shone throughout her house, making it all bright; hence she was named Gopī, and she was the prince's first consort. The second consort, who gave birth to Rāhula, was named Yetan, also named Yashu; her father was named Elder Yishi. The third consort was named Luye; her father was named Elder Shi. On account of the three consorts, the prince asked King Śuddhodana to construct palaces for the three seasons for them." The Great Commentary says: "The bodhisattva Śākyamuni had two wives: one was named Gopikā, and the second was named Yaśodharā, the mother of Rāhula. Gopikā was a treasure-woman, and therefore did not conceive a child."
