[Dāna] The *Fajie cidi* states: 'In the language of Qin, it means giving. If internally there is faithful mind, and externally there are fields of merit and material wealth, with these three things harmonized, the mind generates the dharma of renunciation and is able to destroy stinginess and greed; this is dāna. There are two kinds of giving: first, the giving of wealth; second, the giving of Dharma. The giving of wealth refers to drink and food, clothing, fields and houses, the six domestic animals, slaves and maidservants, rare jewels, and all utensils that sustain life belonging to oneself, as well as wife and children, and even life and limb belonging to others, being made others' property; hence it is said that giving one's body still belongs to the giving of wealth. Whatever is needed, being able to give it all is called the giving of wealth. The giving of Dharma means hearing the expounding of worldly and world-transcending wholesome dharmas from the Buddhas and good spiritual friends, or hearing them from sūtras and treatises, or knowing them oneself through meditative practice, and expounding them for others with a pure mind; all of this is called the giving of Dharma.'
