[Vīrya] The Fajie cidi states: "In the language of Qin, it is called zeal and delight (jinjin yule). Diligently practicing wholesome dharmas without self-indulgent negligence is called vīrya (zeal/vigor). There are two kinds of vīrya: first, bodily zeal; second, mental zeal. If the body diligently cultivates wholesome dharmas—practicing the Way, paying homage, reciting, expounding, exhorting and assisting, and transforming others—this is bodily zeal. If the mind diligently walks the wholesome Path, with thought succeeding thought without interruption, this is mental zeal. Furthermore, diligently cultivating the wholesome dharmas of giving and moral discipline is bodily zeal. Diligently cultivating patience, meditative absorption, and wisdom is mental zeal." The Zhiguan cites older authorities: "Zeal has no separate essence (svabhāva); it merely urges on all practices. Yet by rational deduction, it ought to have a separate essence. Just as ignorance (avidyā) pervades all defiling afflictions (saṃyojana) and yet ignorance exists separately, so now we temporarily refer to diligently urging the mind through sutra recitation to represent zeal; when it proceeds day and night without deficit, one achieves fluidity, though it is not yet the wisdom of samādhi." The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: "Its nature is courageous endurance." The commentary states: "Courageous without fear, it urges itself forward; enduring without dread, it bears toil and weariness." Master Chen says: "To refine one's mind and advance one's intent." The Mahāsaṃnipāta Sutra states: "The Buddha said: 'There are two kinds of zeal: first, initial zeal; second, final consummation of zeal. By initial zeal, the bodhisattva trains in and accomplishes all wholesome dharmas; by final consummation of zeal, one discriminates that all dharmas cannot be apprehended as having an intrinsic nature.'" The Dharmapada says: "If the mind does not arise, zeal knows no bounds."
