[Vyākaraṇa (毘伽羅)] Zhang'an's commentary says: "This is translated as 'root of letters'." Hexi says: "It is the root of worldly letters and writing, the treatise on phonology in classical texts. It universally penetrates the four types of eloquence, reproves worldly phenomena, and praises the monastic Dharma. Its words and diction are elegant, and its principles are profound. Although it is a non-Buddhist treatise, it contains no perverse doctrines; was it not composed by a great being endowed with skillful means? Therefore, this treatise is used as a metaphor for the vaipulya sūtras." The *Biography of the Tripiṭaka Master* says: "The sound is inaccurate; properly it is called *vyākaraṇa* (毘耶羯剌諵). This is translated as 'treatise analyzing sounds and names'. Because it extensively records that which can express all phenomena, it is called the analysis of sounds and names. At the beginning of the kalpa of formation, King Brahmā expounded a million verses. At the beginning of the kalpa of continuation, Śakra abridged it to one hundred thousand verses."
