[Kalala]
Also kalalam. Here translated as "coagulated slip," and also "mixed impurity." Its shape resembles congealed ghee. Of the five stages in the womb, this is the first seven days. The Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra says: "At the time of kalala, three things are present: first, life-force (āyus); second, heat (ūṣman); third, consciousness (vijñāna). Inhalation and exhalation are called lifespan; not rotting and not decaying is called heat, which is the fire element maintained by karma, so that the forms of earth, water, etc. do not rot or decay. The mind in the center is called consciousness, which is the momentary cognizing mind. Ever without increase or decrease, the three phenomena harmoniously combine from birth to death; the seed of this consciousness is the life faculty (jīvitendriya)." Therefore the Zongjing [lu], quoting a treatise, states: "Yet relying on the seed directly producing this consciousness, because of the power of karma, this seed maintains the body of a single retribution and possesses distinct capacities, causing it to be determinate. If this seed lacked this capacity, the body would rot and decay; hence the seed that directly produces it is taken as the life faculty. As for the life faculty, it is nominally designated in dependence on mind: life is that which relies, and mind is that upon which it relies." Master [Dao]sheng said: "When fire burning firewood is rotated, it forms a ring of fire; the ring must necessarily gather the fire to produce illumination. The passions are also like this: they must depend on the mind to accomplish their function. Life relying on mind is just like the passions relying on mind."
