[Sheti] Translated as conventional designation (prajñapti). "Conventional" refers to the three kinds of conventional designations. The Fuxing says: "Because inner causes and outer conditions combine to complete it, the dharma produced thereby is called the conventionality of causal completion. Because thoughts are not real, when a preceding thought perishes, having perished it arises again, and whatever is arisen must perish; calculating that it can continue in succession is called the conventionality of succession. When 'other' depends on 'self', the name of 'other' is conventionally established; when 'self' depends on 'other', 'self' is conventionally established; this mutual dependence is unreal, hence it is called the conventionality of mutual dependence." The Tattvasiddhi-śāstra states: "The three conventionalities are floating and unsubstantial, like smoke, clouds, dust, and fog."
