3. 【Sthūlāccaya】 The Samantapāsādikā states: "'Sthūla' is called great; 'accaya' (zhe) means obstructing the good path. Afterwards one falls into the evil destinies; its substance is vile and defiled. It takes its name from its unwholesome substance because it is capable of completing the offenses of the first two classes." The Viniścayasaṃgrahaṇī explains sthūla as coarse and accaya as transgression. Coarseness is of two kinds: first, an expedient leading to a grave offense; second, being able to sever wholesome roots. As for what is called a transgression, it refers to not practicing in accordance with the precepts established by the Buddha; hence it is called a transgression. The retribution for a sthūlāccaya offense is like a lifespan of four thousand years in the Tuṣita Heaven; in human reckoning, it is 5.06 billion years. This is falling into the Raurava Hell, taking four hundred human years as one day and night in that heaven.
