extracted from the large texts to circulate separately, or they took only verses and made them into fascicles and works. Because of this, towards the end of the age, broad deceptions and excesses daily multiplied. Now they should be subsumed [under their originals], in order to establish firmly the root source.

The above twenty-nine sūtras have mostly caused doubt across the various catalogues due to inconsistencies in their titles and annotations. Their literary style and principles are complex and mixed, and the genuine cannot yet be distinguished from the spurious. These matters require further deliberation, so they are provisionally appended to the catalogue of doubtful texts.

The eight scriptures above, from the Faju [pi jing] downward, were all composed by Xiao Ziliang; therefore, they are appended to the catalogue of spurious texts.
The preceding fifty-three scriptures are all designated as deviating from the genuine. Some begin by plagiarising the golden words [of the Buddha] and end by declaring prognostications and omens; some discuss worldly arts and later cloak them in Dharmic phrasing; some invoke yin and yang, auspiciousness and calamity; or expound on spirits and ghosts, misfortune and fortune. All such works are blatantly spurious. Now they should be kept suppressed and concealed, in order to rescue the world from harm.
