During the Wude era, the Director of Waterways Su Chang was made the prefect of Bazhou. When crossing the Jialing River, a wind arose midstream and the boat sank; more than sixty men and women were all drowned. There was only one concubine who constantly read the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra. When the water entered the boat, she placed the sūtra casket upon her head and vowed to drown together with it. She drifted and surged along with the waves, and shortly thereafter reached the shore. The sūtra casket was wet on the outside but dry on the inside; it still exists today.
