The above twenty-three works in twenty-nine fascicles were all excerpted by Prince Jingling of the Southern Qi.
Since they differed from the root sūtras, they were titled "Excerpts" to show the distinction, allowing later researchers to know their provenance.
Moreover, their flavor is widely communicative, and their principles conform [to the teaching]. They address the cumbersome breadth of worldly customs and examine the disparate paths of dispositions and desires; the Way is preserved within them. In meaning, they are neither suspect nor false. Yet the various catalogues of Sengyou and Changfang all annotate them as suspect scriptures, wholly fearing they might partake in frivolity and that the ensuing ripples might stray from the source. However, in spirit they capture synthesized understanding, and in matter they adopt conciseness. Among prior and subsequent translations, not one preserved the complete original; yet they could still illuminate the likeness and true teachings, guiding and instructing those obscured by dust. The metaphors of a half-gāthā, a full verse, and the precious jade are evident; the four characters and eight words are that upon which the pacification of delusions relies. Stated on this basis, how could they be lumped together without discrimination, as if jade and stone were not distinguished?
Sapo ruotuo juanshu zhuangyan jing.
The above one scripture: upon examination of Sengyou's catalogue, it was produced in the ninth year of the Tianjian era of Liang by the monk Miaoguang of Yingzhou, and he was expelled according to dynastic law.
Pure Land scriptures and others in thirty-five fascicles chanted forth by the nun Sengfa, daughter of Erudite Jiang Mi of the Liang dynasty (Already recorded in the dynastic catalogues; upon examination, they were not derived from translation, and all catalogues place them among the suspect).
