The Biographies of Eminent Monks states: In the early Song [dynasty] of the Yuan[jia] era, there was the novice monk Dharmodgata of Huanglong. He recited the Guanyin-sūtra and purely cultivated ascetic practices. Together with twenty-five disciples, he went in search of the Buddha's realm. He traversed completely barren and perilous lands, yet his pure resolve grew ever firmer. Upon reaching Śrāvastī in India, they encountered a herd of mountain elephants on the road. Dharmodgata held the sūtra, recited, invoked [the Bodhisattva's] name, and took refuge. A lion emerged from the forest, and the elephants fled in terror. Then there was a herd of wild oxen that came roaring, about to do harm. Dharmodgata again took refuge as before. A great vulture flew in, and the oxen scattered in panic. Thus they managed to escape.
