Furthermore, formerly, before the reign of [Emperor] Xiaowu of the Eastern Jin, there was the monk Shi Dao'an of Mount Heng. Having fled the turmoil of the Shi Zhao regime to Xiangyang, he annotated various sūtras such as the Prajñā, the Daoxing, and the Guhyaka, analyzing doubts and clarifying interpretations across more than twenty fascicles. Fearing that they did not accord with principle, he took a vow, saying: 'If what I have said does not violate principle, may I see an auspicious sign.' He then dreamt of a Western monk whose hair was white and whose eyebrows were long, who said to Dao'an: 'The sūtras you have annotated accord remarkably well with the principle. I am not permitted to enter nirvāṇa; I reside in the Western Regions and shall assist you in propagating them. You may set out food [for me] from time to time.' Later, when the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya arrived, Master Huiyuan said: 'The one whom the Upādhyāya dreamt of in the past was Piṇḍola.' Thereupon, they set up a seat and offered him food. Moreover, a divine monk was evoked to manifest his form and preach the Dharma.
