The śramaṇa Dharmakāla—translated here as Fatishi ('Time of Dharma')—was a man of India. In his youth he was talented and acute, with an extraordinary constitution and presence. Upon perusing texts just once, he completely understood both words and principles. He was skilled in the four Vedas and proficient in the five treatises of science (pañcavidyā), with nothing in prophetic charts or occult cycles beyond his grasp. He considered himself to have no equal in the world. Once, entering a monastery, he happened to see the Abhidharmahṛdaya of Dharmaśreṣṭhin. Though he studied it earnestly, he could not fathom its purport. He then sighed deeply, saying: 'The Buddha's teaching plumbs profound depths.' He thereupon went forth into the homeless life, reciting the scriptures of the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna along with the various vinayas. In the third year of Huangchu of Emperor Wen, the year renyin [222 CE], he traveled and taught in Xu and Luo. Seeing that the monastic sangha in the territory of Wei was entirely lacking in vinaya standards, in the second year of Jiaping of King Fang of Qi, the year gengwu [250 CE], he assembled Sanskrit monks at Luoyang to perform the ordination karma (karmavācanā), and translated the Sengqi jieben (one fascicle). This was the beginning of monastic vinaya in this land.
