The śramaṇa Saṅghavarman (which means "Armor of the Saṅgha") was a native of India. In his youth, he abandoned the secular life; his precept-conduct was pure and severe. He had a deep understanding of the Vinaya Piṭaka and was especially skilled in the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya. His demeanor was magnanimous and solemn, commanding respect and admiration from both monastics and laity. The scriptures he translated were detailed and faithful in both text and meaning, without discrepancy between the Sanskrit and the Chinese. Liu Yikang, Prince of Pengcheng, revered his standards of discipline and invited him to become his master; his reputation carried great weight in the capital. In the tenth year of the Yuanjia era of the Song, the year guiyou, he translated at Changgan Monastery: the Abhidharma Vibhāṣā Śāstra (fourteen fascicles), the Sarvāstivāda Mātṛkā Vinaya (ten fascicles), the Abridged Collection of Bodhisattva Mahāvīrya's Distinctions of Karmic Retribution (one fascicle), Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna's Essential Verses Exhorting Kings (one fascicle), and the Text for Inviting the Holy Saṅgha to Bathe (one fascicle)—five works in total, twenty-seven fascicles altogether. Baoyun conveyed the spoken translation, and Huiguan of Daochang Monastery served as scribe.
