The upāsaka Gautama Prajñāruci, translated as "Aspiration for Wisdom", was a native of Vārāṇasī in Southern India, of brāhmaṇa stock. In his youth he studied the Buddha's teachings and was marvelously proficient in the meanings of the sūtras. His spiritual nature was outstanding, and he was quick to comprehend spoken languages. From the first year of the Yuanxiang era of Shanjian, the Prince of Qinghe of the Wei, the year wuwu [538 CE], to the third year of the Xinghe era, the year xinyou [541 CE], in the city of Ye, he translated: the Zhengfa nianchu jing (seventy fascicles), the Sheng shanzhuyi tianzi suowen jing (three fascicles), the Ba foming jing (one fascicle), the Jinse wang jing (one fascicle), the Wugou nü jing (one fascicle), the Wugou youpoyi wen jing (one fascicle), the Baoyi maor jing (one fascicle), the Pusa sifa jing (one fascicle), the Jietuo jieben (one fascicle), the Duzi daoren wen lun (one fascicle), the Huizheng lun (one fascicle), the Ye chengjiu lun (one fascicle), the Weishi wu jingjie lun (one fascicle), and the Yijia shuluojia lun (one fascicle)—altogether fourteen works, totaling eighty-five fascicles. The śramaṇas Tanlin, Sengfang, and others served as scribes.
